Sextant, standardised and interoperable marine and coastal geographical data portal

The Sextant infrastructure enables the management of regulatory geo-referenced data and metadata (register of oyster cultivation areas, official fishing zones, protected marine areas, etc.,) and cartographic products (maps, digital grids, results of models, etc.,) from the Institute and its partners. It proposes cataloguing functionalities to the ISO 19115 standard, data banking, display, downloading and network availability according to the standardised services of the OpenGIS.

Training objectives 

User training:

• Provide support to Ifremer and external personnel in using geographical data in Sextant

• Discover and perfect your use of the application: search, display and extract data

• Benefit from the wide range of data available in Sextant

• Discuss requirements and expectations concerning geographical information

Administrator training:

• Provide support to Ifremer and external personnel in administering geographical data in Sextant

• Learn all about the role of the administrator of the topic catalogue

Learn to correctly write metadata with Sextant's Geonetwork tool

Target audience

Users:

Anyone needing to handle geographical information.

NB: this course does not require any prior knowledge in the field of cartography and geographical information.

Administrators:

Any administrator of the topic catalogue.

Prerequisites: have completed User training.

Supporting material

The course material is available from the Sextant website. Training guides and exercises are presented to each participant. Each participant comes with their own equipment, namely a computer with an Internet connection and/or Wi-Fi and an up-to-date browser in its latest version (preferably Firefox or Google Chrome).

Programme

The Sextant training course is based on alternation between general PowerPoint presentations and practical work on the application via the Ifremer network. A large proportion of the time is devoted to practical work with Sextant. In this way, the trainees quickly access the geographical information that they will need for managing the projects in which they participate.
